In one line
An answer particle — the “yes / indeed / no” words: نَعَمْ، بَلَى، لَا، كَلَّا.
Classical definition
حُرُوفُ الجَوَابِ مَا يُجَابُ بِهِ، كَنَعَمْ وَبَلَى وَأَجَلْ وَلَا وَكَلَّا.
“The answer particles are those with which one replies — like na'am (yes), bala (yes indeed), ajal (certainly), la (no) and kalla (by no means).”
Key words in the Arabic
بَلَىyes indeed — the answer that flips a negative question
Understand it

One distinction here matters enormously in the Quran: نَعَمْ agrees with a question as asked, but بَلَى overturns a negative. When Allah asks أَلَسْتُ بِرَبِّكُمْ (“Am I not your Lord?”), the souls answer بَلَى — “Indeed You are!” Answering نَعَمْ there would have agreed with the negation. One particle, and the covenant depends on it.

The particles of answer
#Meaning
1نَعَمْna'amyes — confirming the statement as it was put, positive or negative
2بَلَىbalāyes it is — and this one turns a negative question positive
3إِيīyes — used with an oath
4أَجَلْajalyes
5جَيْرِjayriyes
6إِنَّinnayes — rare in this use

The pair worth learning properly is نَعَمْ and بَلَى. To did Zayd not come? نَعَمْ agrees with the negative — he did not — while بَلَى contradicts it: he did. Getting these the wrong way round reverses the meaning of the answer.

How to spot it
Recognition test
A standalone reply-word opening a response — نَعَمْ، بَلَى، أَجَلْ، لَا، كَلَّا.
In the Qur'an
بَلَىٰ قَٰدِرِينَ عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّسَوِّىَ بَنَانَهُۥ
Al-Qiyamah 75:4 — “Nay, We are able to put together in perfect order the very tips of his fingers.”
بَلَىٰ answers a question that was put in the negative in the ayah before. It is a harf jawab — a whole reply carried by one word, and it contradicts the denial rather than agreeing with it.

Common questions

Is there an Arabic word that simply means yes?

There is, but Arabic distinguishes more finely than English. One word agrees with a positive question; another contradicts a negative question — answering a not-is-it with a yes-it-is. Using the plain yes to answer a negative question says the opposite of what you mean.
