لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ ﴿1﴾

I swear by this city, Makkah -

NayلَاH
I swearأُقْسِمُF
By thisبِهَذَاCBIP+DEMبِwith / in+هَذَاThis
CityالْبَلَدِIالthe+بَلَدِCity

وَأَنتَ حِلٌّۢ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ ﴿2﴾

And you, [O Muhammad], are free of restriction in this city -

And youوَأَنْتَCBICONJ+PRONSUBJوَand+أَنْتَYou
Are free to dwellحِلٌّI
In thisبِهَذَاCBIP+DEMبِwith / in+هَذَاThis
CityالْبَلَدِIالthe+بَلَدِCity

وَوَالِدٍ وَمَا وَلَدَ ﴿3﴾

And [by] the father and that which was born [of him],

And the begetterوَوَالِدٍCBICONJ+Nوَand+وَالِدٍThe begetter
And whatوَمَاCBICONJ+RELوَand+مَاWhat
He begotوَلَدَF

لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍ ﴿4﴾

We have certainly created man into hardship.

HardshipكَبَدٍI

أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ ﴿5﴾

Does he think that never will anyone overcome him?

He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance."

أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّمْ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ ﴿7﴾

Have We not made for him two eyes?

Two eyesعَيْنَيْنِI

وَلِسَانًا وَشَفَتَيْنِ ﴿9﴾

And a tongue and two lips?

And two lipsوَشَفَتَيْنِCBICONJ+Nوَand+شَفَتَيْنِTwo lips

وَهَدَيْنَٰهُ ٱلنَّجْدَيْنِ ﴿10﴾

And have shown him the two ways?

The two waysالنَّجْدَيْنِIالthe+نَجْدَيْنِTwo ways

فَلَا ٱقْتَحَمَ ٱلْعَقَبَةَ ﴿11﴾

But he has not broken through the difficult pass.

He has attemptedاقْتَحَمَF
The steep pathالْعَقَبَةَIالthe+عَقَبَةَSteep path

وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْعَقَبَةُ ﴿12﴾

And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass?

WhatمَاI
The steep path isالْعَقَبَةُIالthe+عَقَبَةُSteep path is

فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ ﴿13﴾

It is the freeing of a slave

أَوْ إِطْعَٰمٌ فِى يَوْمٍ ذِى مَسْغَبَةٍ ﴿14﴾

Or feeding on a day of severe hunger

Severe hungerمَسْغَبَةٍI

يَتِيمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ ﴿15﴾

An orphan of near relationship

Near relationshipمَقْرَبَةٍI

أَوْ مِسْكِينًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍ ﴿16﴾

Or a needy person in misery

A needy personمِسْكِينًاI
InذَاI
MiseryمَتْرَبَةٍI

ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلْمَرْحَمَةِ ﴿17﴾

And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion.

He isكَانَF
OfمِنَH
Those whoالَّذِينَI
BelieveآمَنُواF
And enjoin each otherوَتَوَاصَوْاCBFCONJ+Vوَand+تَوَاصَوْاEnjoin each other
To patienceبِالصَّبْرِCBIP+Nبِwith / in+الthe+صَبْرِTo patience
And enjoin each otherوَتَوَاصَوْاCBFCONJ+Vوَand+تَوَاصَوْاEnjoin each other
To compassionبِالْمَرْحَمَةِCBIP+Nبِwith / in+الthe+مَرْحَمَةِTo compassion

أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ ﴿18﴾

Those are the companions of the right.

Are the companionsأَصْحَابُI
Of the right handالْمَيْمَنَةِIالthe+مَيْمَنَةِOf the right hand

وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ ﴿19﴾

But they who disbelieved in Our signs - those are the companions of the left.

Of the left handالْمَشْأَمَةِIالthe+مَشْأَمَةِOf the left hand

عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌ مُّؤْصَدَةٌۢ ﴿20﴾

Over them will be fire closed in.
