Classical definition
المُؤَنَّثُ مَا فِيهِ عَلَامَةُ تَأْنِيثٍ لَفْظًا أَوْ تَقْدِيرًا، وَصَحَّ أَنْ تُشِيرَ إِلَيْهِ بِقَوْلِكَ «هَذِهِ».
(شذا العرف)
What it is

A feminine noun (mu'annath) is most often marked by the ta' marbuta (ة) at its end, as in مُسْلِمَة. Some words are feminine by meaning rather than by a visible sign — women's names, certain paired body-parts, and a set of well-known words. Because adjectives and pronouns must agree in gender, spotting the feminine is essential to reading agreement correctly.
